I like to travel light so it was my trusty Sony A7 4 (good in low light) and just 2 lenses.
If you have never seen the refurbished St Pancras Hotel it's a wonder of its age, stunning design and interiors but I was more interested in the people, the stations and the stories.

St Pancras spans the entirety of the railway age from the early days of steam to the latest high speed travel with Eurostar and more. It also embodies luxury with champagne bars, Belgian chocolate shops and literally thousands of people moving through its. stunning spaces every hour.

For someone my size with a camera in hand (6' 4" and chunky) being incognito in order to capture those interesting and different moments isn't easy. However, with practise, it can be done and you merge into the background in these busy places. Next up was Kings Cross, literally one street over as the 3rd of the north London mainline hubs. Kings Cross has had its moments too with it being the main Scotland - London terminus, home of the flying scotsman and latterley platform 9 3/4 being famed for its connection with Harry Potter. Here the architecture has had a refresh yet is equally stunning with its modernist lighting.

My final location later in the day was Baker Street underground. Why here, well because it was one of the first underground stations built (1883) and much of the original architecture from those early steam driven underground trains still remains as part of our capitals 'modern' transit system. Here it is the low light that is most challenging so, being handheld, I had to pick my spots and slow right down.
It really is amazing to just observe as the world passes by, folk in their own worlds, passing through and paying little attention to what is around them .

You can find my take on the whole day below and it would be lovely to get your feedback and to know what subjects you would like me to cover as the year unfolds.

Lindsey

All my Christmasses came at once

https://www.lindseybimages.com/blog/all-my-christmasses-came-at-once

https://www.lindseybimages.com/blog/all-my-christmasses-came-at-once#comments

Uncategorized

We have all heard that phrase and for me it really came true earlier this year, November the 6th to be precise, a day I will never forget. My love of wildlife is well known and my passion for the rhino particularly. When I set out to Kenya on my last photographic safari it was to see rhino, both black and white, in their own world and I was rewarded with images capturing what I thought would be the closest I would ever get to these wonderful creatures. 'Your move' below sums it up and shows just how big and domineering they are close up. With only around 17,500 white rhino in the world they remain endangered and we must do what we can to support the work to protect them.

Your Move

As part of my contribution to preserving our wildlife I became a member of ZSL - Zoological Society London - London and Whipsnade Zoos as they are better known in 2009 and have continued to support their programmes ever since.

Imagine my surprise and delight then when, in September, I received an email telling me I had won a meet the keeper day with an animal / bird of my choice. Well, it had to be white Rhino and, after some tooing and frowing we set the date - November 6th at Whipsnade Zoo.

Elaine and I had a great day at the zoo prior to our 3.30 session and much to our delight captured this little fellow, unnamed at the time on his first day out in the paddock.

We spent ages watching him racing around, exploring the new space, smells and muddy pools. As 3.30 approached we headed over to meet the keeper expecting a nice chat and the opportunity to learn more about the species and the work to preserve them. Introductions done we chatted and found out more about the programmes Europe, Americas and Africa that were ongoing including the breeding programme that Whipsnade are involved in.

It was at the point that the day really took off. We were invited behind the scenes to meet the new youngster and his mom. I say youngster as he was only 5 weeks old yet he weighed 50kg at birth. With excellent, close supervision and direction from the keepers we were able to get close to him and his mother, a really unique moment for me. As everyone knows mothers are rightly extremely protective of new borns and Fahari, who weighs 1,800kg was no exception.

Imagine our shock and delight then when the keeper was able to slowly entice them both to where we were crouched, behind the safety fencing, and were invited to actually stroke them behind their ears. Don't mistakenly think they are tame or domesticated. These are wild animals whose reputation is well known and it was only through the keepers extensive knowledge gained through 20+ years working with Rhino and following the safety advice to the letter that we got this close and were so privileged. In case you wondered the skin behind the ears is like a medium hard leather, warm and relatively supple.

With their welfare paramount we didn't stay too long but our final treat was to meet dad, Sizzle who weighs 2,200kg (Males can go upto 2,500kg). What a day and what precious moments. There will only ever be a small handful of people who will ever get this close to these wonderful creatures and we were so privileged to be the first.

I hope you have found this blog interesting and welcome your comments or feedback. Brummies are friendly, hardworking folk so as well as capturing some of the great architecture around the city we were after the people, the beating heart of the city at work, rest and play.

Street photography is all about the here and now. Being ultra observant and adapting to the conditions and the light. We were on a late afternoon game drive, a super afternoon with lots of spectacular game and colourful bird sightings. As we bounced through the bush, up ahead were two small groups of Thornicroft Giraffe, stock still and alert. They were all fixated on a spot in the bush a few hundred metres ahead. We skirted close to them but their gaze never wandered, something up ahead was clearly of interest them.

As we drove closer to the spot we could make out two prone shapes, just metres apart that we could scarcely take in. Two of Africas greatest predators, a leopard and a hyena were stretched out, completely relaxed in each others company and taking only a casual interest in our group as we approached. Their individual markings so different yet both so well camouflaged in this one setting. We sketched and photographed them together, such a unique sight probably never to be repeated.

Close Encounter - Zambia

As the light faded and the sun started to set we turned and made our way back through the bush to be greeted by yet another wonderful sight. I am no different and my reflections included focussing on the questions posed by event visitors across the year.
How did you achieve that image? Where do you recommend for x?
Isn't that dangerous? and many more.

Knowing how precious time is to all of us I thought the best way for me to share some of that would be through a periodic blog so here we are. Whilst I have thoughts on the areas to cover based on the questions and interest so far I welcome more, so what is it about my photography or photography in general that stirs your interest?

2018 promises to be a big year for me and I want to include you in my plans, not just in my blog. I have been accepted into the Society of International Travel and Tourism photographers as well as the International Nature and Wildlife Society and that brings more exposure, more learning opportunities and professional challenges along the way.

Separately, alongside my own Photography tuition and holidays l have been offered a great chance to work with my first real photography tutor & mentor, Garreth Anderson and his UK based photography company goexplorephotography.com in delivering landscape workshops and creating new wildlife workshops across Shropshire and the UK (I will share a link to the programme as its developed).

With a new solo exhibition in March and new events across the year it promises to be busy and it would be great to have you involved, through the blog or one of the other opportunities that all revolve around nature and photography. The first blog edition in January will give my take on "Whats in a photograph'?

Until then enjoy the weekend and have a very happy new year.
LindseyB.
